China's Central Bank Breaks Pattern with Record Gold Purchase Amid Rising Prices

China's central bank has made its largest monthly gold purchase in three years, despite rising prices. The People's Bank of China added approximately 20.2 tonnes of gold to its reserves in August, the largest single-month addition since October 2023, and a continuation of its buying streak that now stands at 22 consecutive months.

This purchasing spree has been ongoing for over a year and a half, with the central bank accumulating gold at an unprecedented rate. The recent purchase brings China's total gold holdings to 76.73 million troy ounces, worth around $350 billion at current prices.

The timing of this purchase is particularly notable as gold prices rose by almost 10% in August alone, driven partly by concerns over the US Treasury's plans to ramp up buybacks of government debt. Instead of waiting for a dip in prices, China's central bank chose to continue its buying spree.

This move suggests that the PBOC is making a deliberate bet against holding dollars and diversifying away from dollar-denominated assets. With foreign reserves still predominantly denominated in US dollars, every additional tonne of gold represents a significant step towards reducing this exposure.
