China's Crude Imports Ease Amid Iran Conflict Uncertainty

China's crude oil imports have eased in July as the ongoing Iran conflict disrupts global supply. The country imported 8.41 million barrels per day (bpd), a 24% decrease from last year, but an improvement from the low of 7.12 million bpd seen in June.

The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since February 28, causing a decline of approximately 5 million bpd in flows from the Middle East. This has led to a re-evaluation of global energy supply chains and a balancing act for countries like China.

China's strategic crude stockpiles, estimated at least 1.2 billion barrels, have provided a crucial buffer, allowing the country to reduce its reliance on volatile imports while maintaining domestic operations.
