China's Gold Imports Soar by 89% in First Half Amid Falling Prices
China's gold imports surged by 89.1% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year, as falling bullion prices and a stronger yuan made internationally sourced gold relatively cheaper for domestic buyers.
The country imported 864.95 tons of gold between January and June, with the largest monthly increase occurring in March when imports reached 161.86 tons from 73.67 tons in the same month last year.
The international gold price declined by 8% during the first half, while the yuan-denominated price dropped by 10%, according to a report by the World Gold Council (WGC).
