Chinese Crude Oil Imports Plummet Amid Strait of Hormuz Disruptions

China's crude oil imports fell by 32% in the second quarter of 2026, to 8.1 million barrels per day, as higher prices following disrupted flows through the Strait of Hormuz reduced global demand.

The monthly data from China's General Administration of Customs show that imports were below 8.0 million b/d for the first time since 2016 in May and June.

This decrease contrasts with record-high imports in 2025, when China imported an annual average of 11.6 million b/d, and also contrasts with lower crude oil prices at the time.
