Chinese Maleic Anhydride, Acrylonitrile Markets Rebound on Cost Support
China's maleic anhydride, acrylonitrile, and ABS markets experienced a cost-driven rebound in July. The recovery came as oil and feedstock costs increased alongside butane prices. This change in dynamics lifted domestic prices for these commodities.
The rebound was particularly pronounced in the maleic anhydride market, where higher prices attracted inquiries from overseas buyers sensitive to price fluctuations.
However, the markets remain cautious due to weak summer demand, which continues to limit momentum and make the durability of this rebound uncertain. Energy values, export interest, and downstream buyer acceptance of higher prices will be key factors in determining the market's direction going forward.
In July, maleic anhydride prices rose after producers returned from maintenance, improving supply, while acrylonitrile prices were lifted by cost pressure following a decline in demand. ABS prices rebounded due to renewed shipping and supply concerns that increased oil and feedstock costs.
