Citadel Aims to Buy US Shale Oil Production Assets Amid Crude Price Surge
Citadel, a prominent hedge fund and commodities trader, is considering expanding its ownership of physical assets by buying US shale oil production assets. The firm has reportedly held talks with private equity firms that own exploration and production companies about acquiring oil-weighted assets.
The move comes as crude prices continue to spike due to escalating Middle East tensions, making US oil and natural gas assets more attractive to buyers. Citadel's interest in physical production assets could serve as a hedge for its financial trading business, as the value of physical barrels tends to increase during supply disruptions or geopolitical shocks.
The firm has already been active in the commodities market, trading oil, natural gas, power, and other commodities. Citadel's potential acquisition of a platform like WildFire Energy would not only provide producing assets but also an existing management team to operate them.
