Climate Change Threatens to Triple Global Wheat Prices as Droughts Worsen
A new study warns that climate change could triple global wheat prices if temperatures rise by 3°C above mid-20th-century levels. Researchers found a strong link between severe water scarcity and global commodity price spikes, with synchronized drought events across multiple major breadbaskets overwhelming market buffers.
The study, published in the journal Earth's Future, analyzed three global staple crops: wheat, maize, and rice. While all three showed some vulnerability to climate-driven shocks, wheat stood out as particularly sensitive to severe water scarcity. The researchers attributed this difference to wheat's unique geographic footprint, high trade volume relative to total production, and dependence on rainfall during critical growing periods.
The study's authors emphasize that drought does not operate in a vacuum, and other factors such as energy prices, fertilizer costs, currency fluctuations, grain storage inventories, and geopolitical disruptions also dictate final consumer costs. However, they argue that severe water scarcity provides a distinct, predictable climate-driven baseline that will increasingly dictate food affordability.
To address these compounding risks, the authors call for a multi-pronged strategy to build global agricultural resilience. This includes accelerating the breeding of heat- and drought-tolerant crop varieties, modernizing irrigation systems to enhance soil moisture retention across vulnerable croplands, and strengthening international coordination around strategic grain reserves and trade agreements.
