CN Rail Sees Strong Grain Movement Amid Harvest Season
CN Rail is reporting strong grain movement across Western Canada as the harvest season gets underway. According to David Przednowek, Assistant Vice President of Grain with CN Rail, carry-in stocks are above average due to last year's large production.
The high demand for grain shipments has been driven by solid canola processing margins and uncertainty affecting grain exports from the Black Sea region, which has helped support wheat prices. Weekly volumes have averaged around 550,000 metric tonnes per week during the first weeks of the crop year.
CN is working closely with grain companies to ensure rail capacity is available where and when it's needed, as producers actively harvest in southern regions of the Prairies. Przednowek notes that having more hopper cars operating throughout the network should make the seasonal transition smoother than previous years.
