CNG Price Hike Hits Delhi-NCR for Fifth Time This Year
CNG users in Delhi-NCR woke up to another price hike on August 29 as Indraprastha Gas Limited increased prices by ₹3.89 per kg. The new rates took effect at 6 am, with CNG now costing ₹86.98 per kg in Delhi.
This is the fifth increase in 2026, and Delhi's CNG price has become ₹9.89 per kg costlier since mid-May. IGL blamed elevated international liquefied natural gas prices and the growing cost of imported fuel for the hike.
The price difference between Delhi and neighboring cities remains significant, with Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram seeing rates around ₹5-8 per kg higher than Delhi. IGL's reliance on imported LNG, which is exposed to international price volatility, has left local CNG consumers vulnerable to global events.
The latest hike comes against a challenging global gas-market backdrop, with the conflict in West Asia disrupting energy shipments and reducing gas flows from important suppliers. For IGL, this means higher procurement costs, shrinking margins, and an unfavourable sourcing mix. The company's first-quarter financial results showed a 33% decline in adjusted net income and a 31% fall in unit EBITDA margins.
Auto and taxi unions have now demanded an immediate fare revision, citing the sharp increase in CNG costs as a significant burden on drivers. They threaten to hold a strike on September 9 if their demands are not addressed. The All India Motor and Goods Transport Association also warned that higher fuel costs could eventually affect freight charges and prices paid by consumers.
The actual increase in cost for CNG drivers depends on how much fuel they use, with private motorists buying 20 kg per month facing an additional ₹77.80 expenditure every month, and commercial drivers consuming 10 kg a day facing an extra ₹38.90 daily cost, or around ₹1,167 over 30 days.
