Coinbase Rolls Out Perpetual Oil Futures Amid Regulatory Tussle
Coinbase has launched perpetual futures contracts for WTI and Brent crude oil, making it possible for eligible non-US traders to speculate on crude oil prices without ever touching a barrel of oil.
The new products are available 24/7 with no expiry date and settle in $USDC stablecoin, which supports liquidity around the clock. This move broadens Coinbase's derivatives lineup at a moment when US regulators and the CME are clashing over how perpetual futures should be regulated.
Coinbase's entry into the oil market is significant as it signals that the exchange wants its perpetual futures infrastructure to work for traditional commodities too, not just Bitcoin or Ether. The addition of WTI and Brent perpetual futures expands what Coinbase offers beyond its existing crypto derivatives suite, making it a major player in the derivatives market.
