Commodities See Record Long Positions Amid Tensions and Escalating Conflicts
The latest Commitments of Traders (COT) report revealed strong moves in commodities, driven by renewed tensions in the Middle East and escalating attacks on agricultural export infrastructure. Crude oil and refined products saw a fresh boost, while key crops like wheat were supported.
However, the major takeaway from this week's data was the record agriculture long positions held by managed money, which jumped to 1.37 million contracts, representing a nominal value of around USD 53 billion. This is the highest level since records began in 2006 and highlights an increasingly crowded trade.
The speed and scale of the build-up make the sector more vulnerable to long liquidation should either the fundamental narrative soften or technical momentum deteriorate. Record managed-money net longs were reached in corn, soybean meal, and cotton, while multi-year highs were seen in soybeans, sugar, and wheat.
