Commodity Prices Soar Amid Climate Change, Wars, and Heatwaves
Global commodity prices have skyrocketed due to climate change, heatwaves, and ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has released a report stating that global food price index rose to 131.1 points in July 2026, its highest level since January 2023.
The report highlights that sugar prices have increased by 5.6% in July, while cereal prices rose by 3.4%. Wheat prices alone saw a 5.8% increase during the same period.
The devastating heatwave in Europe in June led to the destruction of around 9 million tons of various crops, including wheat, barley, maize, and oats. This has significantly affected global supply chains.
