Conglomerates Rush into India's Booming Gold Loan Market
India's gold loan market is experiencing rapid growth, driven by soaring gold prices and changing borrower behavior. In response to this trend, conglomerate-backed non-bank financiers are entering the market through acquisitions.
Tata Capital has taken a majority stake in Kerala-based Yogakshemam Loans Ltd for approximately Rs 411 crore, while Godrej Capital is acquiring Kanakadurga Finance's gold loan business for Rs 117.5 crore plus an additional Rs 17.5 crore on certain conditions.
Analysts believe that the opportunity extends beyond simply adding another loan product. The industry is undergoing a structural transformation, with borrower behavior having fundamentally changed. Even small funding requirements are no longer met by shying away from pledging gold.
