Congress Criticizes E20 Policy Over Rising Food Prices and Vehicle Damage
The Indian government's E20 policy has come under fire from Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, who claims that it is driving up food prices and causing vehicle damage. The policy involves blending up to 20% ethanol with petrol.
Ramesh pointed out that the diversion of sugarcane and grains towards ethanol production has led to a shortage of these commodities for food production, resulting in higher sugar prices. He cited reports showing that sugar prices have risen from Rs 48 to Rs 67 per kg and jaggery from Rs 50 to Rs 65 per kg over the last three months.
The Congress leader also raised concerns about the impact of E20 petrol on vehicles, alleging that those not designed for a 20% ethanol blend could face lower mileage and compatibility-related problems. He questioned why petrol prices have not fallen despite lower international crude oil prices and the cost benefits associated with ethanol blending.
