ConocoPhillips' CEO Ryan Lance will retire after 14 years at the helm of the oil producer. Lance took over in 2012, following ConocoPhillips' split from Phillips 66 and its transformation into a pure exploration and production company.

During his tenure, ConocoPhillips has grown to become one of the largest independent oil and gas producers globally, with operations spanning North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East. Lance oversaw major portfolio moves, including the sale of billions of dollars' worth of non-core assets after the 2014 oil price collapse.

As crude prices recovered, ConocoPhillips shifted to targeted acquisitions, buying Concho Resources in 2021 to expand its position in the Permian Basin and later acquiring Shell's Permian assets. The company completed a $22.5 billion acquisition of Marathon Oil in late 2024, significantly increasing its U.S. shale footprint.

Konnie Haynes-Welsh will become senior vice president and chief financial officer after the retirement of CFO Andy O'Brien on September 1. ConocoPhillips' shares rose 1.4% in premarket trading following the announcement of Lance's retirement and its second-quarter earnings beat, which saw an adjusted profit of $3.24 per share compared to analysts' average estimate of $2.88 per share.

Lance has led ConocoPhillips through a period of transformation and growth, and his departure marks a new chapter for the company. O'Brien will take over as CEO on September 1, bringing his experience as CFO to the top role.
