Cooking Gas Prices Drop as Imports Surge
Cooking gas prices have dropped significantly across several states in Nigeria due to increased imports and local supply. According to industry observers, LPG imports surged by about 1,400% to 1.5 kilotonnes per day in June 2026.
As a result, the retail price of LPG has fallen from between N1,700 and N1,800 per kilogram to between N1,400 and N1,600 per kilogram in some states.
The decline has revived patronage, with many households gradually increasing their consumption. However, some residents have expressed concerns that the prices are still too high for them to switch back to cooking gas full-time.
According to data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), LPG imports have increased significantly in recent months. The Federal Government has also removed import duty and Value Added Tax on cooking gas, compressed natural gas, and electric vehicles to boost cleaner energy adoption.
