Copper Demand Boosts ASX 200 to New Heights
The Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) 200 index surged above 9,000 points on the back of positive copper outlook, driven by growing conviction that supply cannot keep pace with emerging demand vectors.
Copper has been identified as a key driver behind the strength in mining stocks, particularly those with exposure to artificial intelligence infrastructure spending. This trend is expected to continue due to the increasing demand for copper in the build-out of hyperscale data centers and electric vehicle adoption.
The ASX 200's +2.3% monthly return for four consecutive months has placed it firmly in momentum territory, where trend-following strategies tend to amplify moves in the prevailing direction. This has resulted in a rise of 1.3% to $170.57 for Rio Tinto and 2.0% to $60.31 for BHP.
