Copper Demand Shifts: Anglo American Focuses on Brownfield Expansion
The demand for copper and iron ore is shifting as the world transitions to cleaner energy. While electric vehicles are often cited as a key driver of copper demand, this narrative overlooks the broader electrification infrastructure that is reshaping commodity requirements.
Copper grid expansion, offshore wind interconnection, utility-scale battery storage systems, and industrial electrification collectively consume volumes of copper that dwarf passenger vehicle demand growth. Mining project development timelines have extended materially over the past decade due to permitting complexity, community engagement obligations, environmental impact assessment requirements, and rising capital intensity.
Anglo American's strategy focuses on brownfield development and optimising existing producing assets rather than large-scale greenfield construction. Brownfield expansion reduces execution risk, delivers production uplift on compressed timelines, and improves the internal rate of return profile of invested capital.
