Copper Hits Record Speculator Longs, Sugar and Lumber Show Contrasting Signals
Copper has reached an all-time extreme in large-speculator positioning, according to this week's Commitments of Traders report. The current reading is more net long than any previous point in the available data history, exceeding even June 2024's exceptionally stretched positioning.
The signal does not necessarily indicate a reversal in copper's price trend, as large speculators tend to follow established trends and may continue to expand their exposure while prices remain higher. However, for those already long on copper, this extreme reading is a clear warning that the risk attached to an existing position has increased.
The positioning in sugar also shows a bearish change signal, with commercials recording a 43% shift in their net positions. This combination of bearish commercial adjustments and optimistic small-speculator positioning is notable because it mirrors the structure seen around the March top.
