Copper Market Stunned by Uncertainty Over White House Tariff Decision
The White House has not yet decided whether to impose tariffs on refined copper, causing uncertainty in the market. According to Reuters, officials are weighing concerns about higher prices for the red metal and its potential impact on manufacturing costs against the benefits of encouraging domestic mining.
The administration's hesitation comes as it prioritizes affordability ahead of November's midterm elections, with President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers facing pressure to demonstrate that their economic policies lower costs for American consumers and businesses.
Copper prices have been rising due to a surplus in physical copper flooding US warehouses. The report from Reuters has caused US copper prices to sink 4.6%.
Stocks related to copper, such as Freeport-McMoRan (FCX), Southern Copper (SCCO), and Teck Resources, have fallen significantly: FCX by 8%, SCCO by 7%, and Teck Resources by 7.9%. Ero Copper declined 8.6% and Capstone Copper lost 8.2%, while First Quantum Minerals retreated 6.4%.
