Copper Prices Hit Record Highs Amid AI Boom and Tariff Uncertainty
Copper prices have reached record highs due to a combination of factors including tight global supply, robust demand from the AI boom, and uncertainty over tariffs. The metal's future traded in New York settled at $6.89 per pound on Wednesday, its highest level on record.
The surge in demand for copper is largely driven by the increasing need for electric vehicles and infrastructure for powering AI data centers. At the same time, copper production has declined due to poor weather and deteriorating mine quality.
Chile, the world's largest copper producer, saw a 6.6% decline in output in the first half of the year. Concerns about tariffs are also contributing to higher prices, with traders stockpiling metal in anticipation of potential tariffs.
Copper can be found in everything from cars to computers to the wiring in buildings, and its rise to record highs is likely to send higher prices rippling through to businesses.
