Copper Prices Poised for Further Growth Amidst Energy Transition
Copper prices have broken multi-year highs at approximately $6.20 per pound, but experts say there's still room for growth.
The metal has long been considered a barometer of global economic health, earning its nickname 'Dr. Copper' due to its ability to anticipate the direction of investment cycles and industrial activity.
QNB Economics notes that despite copper's remarkable price appreciation in recent years, it remains attractively valued when assessed against a longer historical trajectory.
The global energy transition is driving significant demand for copper, as renewable energy technologies such as wind, solar, and hydropower require substantial amounts of the metal. Electric vehicles alone are particularly copper-intensive, requiring up to four times more copper than conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.
Critical to this growth is the role that copper plays in grid modernisation, transmission networks, large-scale battery storage, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. These demand drivers are largely insensitive to short-term macroeconomic conditions.
