Copper Prices Soar Amid Supply Risks and Tightening Markets

Copper prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME) have reached record highs, driven by falling LME stocks and tariff-related pre-emptive buying in the US. Commerzbank's Barbara Lambrecht notes that this has created an unusually large cash, 3-month spread.

The tight stocks and structural deficits are not only a short-term concern but also point to a medium- to long-term supply shortfall in the market. Demand for copper is being driven by technological and energy policy shifts in the global economy, according to Lambrecht. The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts a 25% supply shortfall by 2035.

The current supply chain risks are multifaceted, with weak smelter margins leading to potential production cuts in China and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Furthermore, longer-term demand growth and lagging mine development also indicate a future copper supply shortage.
