Copper Prices Soar to New Record High Amid Supply Chain Woes
The price of copper has reached an all-time high on the London Metal Exchange (LME), trading at $14,533 per metric ton on Monday evening. This surpasses the previous record set earlier this year and marks a significant increase in value for the industrial metal.
Copper production in Chile, the world's largest producer of copper ore, has declined by 9.4 percent compared to last year due to unfavorable weather conditions. Production problems in other major producing countries like Indonesia have also weighed on supply.
The rising demand for copper is driven by its increasing use in electrical wiring and electronic components, as well as its need for power grids, electric vehicles, and other applications related to the energy transition.
