Copper Prices Soar to New Record on LME Amid AI, EV, and Defense Demand

Copper prices have surged to a new record high on the London Metal Exchange (LME), driven by increasing structural demand, constrained supply, and speculative market flows. The metal's price has risen approximately 16.6% from its 2025 closing level of $12,466 per metric tonne, reaching over $14,530.

The growth of artificial intelligence and the rapid construction of data centers are significant parts of the demand story, but copper requirements extend beyond wiring used inside data centers themselves. These facilities consume large amounts of electricity, requiring additional power generation, transmission lines, substations, transformers, and broader upgrades to the electrical grid.

As countries transition toward electric vehicles and renewable energy, another layer of demand is added, with electric vehicles generally using more copper than traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. Solar installations, wind farms, and battery-storage projects also require copper, along with transmission infrastructure needed to move that electricity from where it's generated to where it's consumed.

Defense spending may contribute to the demand outlook as modern military equipment, communications systems, aircraft, ships, and weapons systems all require electrical components. However, copper supply cannot be increased overnight due to the time lag between deciding to develop a mine and producing the first tonne of copper.
