Copper Prices Soar to Record High Amid Global Supply Constraints
Copper prices have surged to historic highs due to global supply constraints, hitting an all-time peak of $14,533 per ton on the London Metal Exchange (LME). This upward trend has seen copper increase by 17% since the start of the year and 47% over the past twelve months. According to analysts, the primary driver behind this surge is a significant supply squeeze attributed to various factors, including US tariffs and deteriorating mining conditions globally.
The scarcity of copper is not just about its availability but also about its distribution and accessibility at critical locations. As Jeff Currie, a veteran commodities strategist, noted, 'Copper's record-breaking run above $14,500 per ton should get everyone's attention.' He emphasized that metal stranded in one part of the world is unavailable to everyone outside it.
With demand remaining steady, supply chain constraints are further exacerbating the situation. Analysts predict that solid demand growth, juxtaposed with ongoing supply challenges, will foster tighter market conditions, potentially leading to further price increases.
