Copper Prices Soar to Record High Amid Tariff Anticipation
Copper prices have reached an all-time high on the London Metal Exchange after weeks of anticipation over potential US tariffs on refined metal imports. The benchmark three-month futures price gained as much as 0.8% to trade at $14,533 a ton.
This surge is largely driven by the possibility of expanded US tariffs, which has led traders to stockpile copper in the US, creating a shortage and putting pressure on short positions. Despite growing macroeconomic and geopolitical headwinds, including a war in Iran and rising US borrowing costs, copper prices continue to rise.
Major miners such as Rio Tinto Group, BHP Group, Glencore Plc, and Zijin Mining Group Co. have seen significant profit increases due to the performance of their copper units, but some have faced operational challenges this year, including Chile's copper shipments sinking to a low in August.
