Copper Prices Soar to Record Highs Amid AI Boom and Tariff Uncertainty

The price of copper has reached record highs due to a combination of factors including strong demand from the AI boom and uncertainty over tariffs. Copper futures traded in New York settled at $6.89 per pound on Wednesday, while those in London are also at record highs. This surge in prices is largely attributed to the tariff uncertainty, with traders stockpiling metal as they wait for potential tariff announcements. According to Edward Meir, commodity analyst at Marex, people are buying up copper because they want to be prepared for a possible tariff imposition.

Copper's wide applications across industries such as electronics and construction contribute to its high demand. However, there is concern over the tight supply due to poor weather conditions and deteriorating mine quality. Global copper mine output declined by 1.1% in the first half of this year, according to preliminary data from the International Copper Study Group.

The impact on businesses and consumers will be significant as prices rise. The cost of copper wire and cable has already increased by about 18% year-over-year in July, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While there is a global surplus of refined copper, the decline in mine production raises concerns over tightening supply.
