Copper Prices Surge on Tariff Uncertainty and AI-Driven Demand
Copper prices have seen a significant increase in July, rising by 3.65% over the past month alone. According to Jacob White, CFA, director of ETF product management at Sprott Asset Management, this is due to a combination of factors, including uncertainty over copper tariffs and the growing demand for electrical infrastructure driven by artificial intelligence.
The confusion over copper tariffs has led to companies transporting refined copper into the United States before potential tariffs take effect. In July, over 200,000 metric tons of refined copper reached U.S. ports, marking the largest monthly inflow since data began in 2014.
As White pointed out, artificial intelligence is shifting from a focus on hardware to a need for stronger electrical infrastructure, which copper plays a key role in manufacturing. This trend is expected to continue, driving up demand for the metal and potentially benefiting funds like the Sprott Copper Miners ETF (COPP).
