Copper Prices Swing Amid Supply Concerns and Economic Uncertainties
Copper prices have been volatile in recent sessions as investors weigh key market drivers. On one hand, supply concerns and strong exports support the long-term bullish outlook, while on the other, rising inventories and economic uncertainties curb gains.
The red metal has found some support from a surge in US copper imports, with July's shipments reaching 200,000 tonnes, the highest monthly import in 12 years. This has added to the bullish outlook, but investors remain cautious over possible taxes on refined copper imports.
The White House has yet to announce any levies, and the deadline for the US Commerce Department's recommendation passed in June. Meanwhile, stockpiles in warehouses linked to the Shanghai Futures Exchange have risen by close to 30% in the past week.
As a conventional economic bellwether, copper prices move in tandem with global economic health. Persistent geopolitical tensions and China's property market crisis continue to impact price movements. The US dollar has bounced off its three-month low ahead of July's PCE price index, easing bets on a September interest rate hike.
