Copper Reaches All-Time Extreme Net Position, Metals Complex Shows Stress
Copper futures have reached an all-time extreme in net positions according to the Commitments of Traders report, sparking both caution and speculation about the market's next move. This reading is considered bearish by conventional interpretation, but the 2003 copper rally offers a rare example of commercial capitulation, where short hedges can add fuel to the rally instead of stopping it.
The metals complex as a whole is also showing signs of stress, with Large Speculator positioning across gold, silver, copper, platinum, and palladium reaching bearish extremes. This contrasts with copper's own extreme, which is unprecedented in its combined futures-and-options data history.
