Copper Soars to All-Time High, Brent Crude Nears Century Mark Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Copper prices have hit an all-time high on the London Metal Exchange (LME) at $14,617 per tonne, while Brent crude oil is nearing the century mark. The rally in copper prices is attributed to a combination of factors including tightening mine supply, shifting global trade flows due to potential US tariffs on refined copper, and accelerating demand from electrification, renewable energy, power infrastructure, and AI.
The rise in crude oil prices is mainly driven by rising geopolitical tensions in the Persian Gulf region. This has raised concerns about inflationary pressure and a potential rate hike by the RBI if crude prices sustain near or above $100 per barrel.
The rally in copper and crude oil prices has also attracted investors to buy stocks of companies that are expected to benefit from higher prices. On the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Hindustan Copper, Vedanta, and other copper miners and producers saw significant gains, while oil stocks like Oil India and ONGC also rose.
However, the increase in copper prices may have negative consequences for sectors like real estate, cables & wires, electrical & electronic equipment, and power production, transmission & distribution, as it could lead to higher input costs.
