Copper Surges in DRC as Cobalt Exports Decline
Copper prices are on the rise in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), prompting major mining groups to pivot towards this critical metal. The shift is driven by increasing demand for copper, which far outstrips that for cobalt.
Glencore and CMOC, two prominent mining operators in the DRC, have seen significant increases in their copper production. In the first half of 2026, Glencore produced 397,000 tonnes of copper, a 15% increase from the same period last year. This includes 138,400 tonnes from its African assets, up 66%.
Cobalt exports have been restricted in recent times, contributing to the shift towards copper. Glencore's cobalt output fell by 46% during the same period, reaching just 10,200 tonnes. The trend is clear: as demand for copper grows, major mining groups are adapting their strategies to meet this increasing need.
