Corn Futures Surge to Multi-Year Highs Amid US Yield Concerns
Corn futures surged to multi-year highs on Wednesday due to growing concerns over US corn yields and ongoing disruptions in Black Sea grain exports. The most-traded corn contract on the Chicago Board of Trade rose 0.8% to $5.27-3/4 per bushel, its highest level since July 2023.
The price increase followed disappointing results from a widely watched Midwest field tour last week, which projected this year's US crop to be well below current estimates. The USDA reported that US corn crop conditions fell more sharply than expected last week, further exacerbating concerns over yields.
Argus analysts attributed the price jump to deteriorating crop conditions and lower yield prospects. However, they noted that a large planted area in Argentina could provide some supply relief, with the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange predicting moisture from El Niño will bring benefits to the country's major corn exporter status.
