Corn Leafhoppers Wreak Havoc on Argentine Corn Crops

Farmers in northern Argentina are facing significant damage to their corn crops due to an infestation of corn leafhoppers (Dalbulus maidis). The damage is worse than last year's, and experts warn that it may worsen during the upcoming growing season.

The key factor influencing future insect populations will be frost during the Argentine winter. Corn leafhoppers have low tolerance for cold weather and seek refuge in winter crops that serve as a 'green bridge'.

Most corn planting in northern Argentina occurs late, beginning in January. This leaves the crop vulnerable to infestation as the insect migrates from other regions of the country. Scientists recommend planting corn between January 1st and the 10th to minimize damage.
