Corn Prices Soar Near $5.50, Sparking Speculation About $6 Target
After a wild summer, corn prices are on the rise, and some market observers believe they could reach $6 per bushel by year's end. The current price for December 2026 corn is near $5.50, the highest price since July 2023.
The rally is attributed to a combination of factors, including escalating Russia-Ukraine hostilities and unexpectedly poor crop tour results. Weather extremes have also impacted yields in the western Corn Belt, while excessive rainfall has affected eastern regions.
Luke Williams, an ag risk management adviser at Advance Trading, notes that August is typically a time when corn prices set a marketing-year low. However, this year's market behavior is diverging from historical trends.
Farmers are advised to be proactive with their marketing strategies and use tools such as put and call options to protect themselves against potential price fluctuations.
