Costco Hikes Motor Oil Prices Amid Record Crude Costs
Costco has increased the price of its Kirkland Signature full-synthetic motor oil due to surging crude oil costs. The retailer, known for competitive pricing, now charges $57.99 per 10-quart container, up from around $30 previously. Customers are also limited to two containers per week, a restriction not seen before.
The recent spike in motor oil prices can be attributed to refineries increasing their profitability by refining crude into fuel rather than motor oil, as fuel prices have become more lucrative. Additionally, the complexity and cost of modern motor oil formulations, including enhanced testing procedures and licensing fees for branding, contribute to higher production expenses.
The global oil market is experiencing significant pressure due to geopolitical tensions. The conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran continues to affect oil prices, particularly with regards to navigational control over critical waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz. Recent satellite imagery has revealed potential disruptions at Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline, a key export route.
