Counterfeit Engine Oil Raises Concerns Over Vehicle Damage in Nigeria

The discovery of an engine oil production operation in Nigeria has highlighted concerns over counterfeit lubricants and their potential to cause costly damage to vehicles. The facility was found to be mixing and packaging dark lubricant products using containers and labels resembling established engine-oil brands, including Mobil and Baumann.

Engine oil plays a critical role in protecting moving components inside an engine by reducing friction, managing heat, preventing excessive wear, and keeping deposits under control. Counterfeit or poorly formulated lubricants may not provide these protections, leading to accelerated engine wear, sludge, overheating, and expensive mechanical problems.

The financial consequences of using substandard engine oil can extend far beyond the price paid for the lubricant. Engine repairs or replacement can cost vehicle owners substantial amounts, making a seemingly routine oil change a major expense.
