Croatia's Olive Oil Imports Outpace Domestic Production for First Time
Croatia's olive oil industry has hit a milestone this year, marking its first time ever that imports surpassed domestic production. According to data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, the country imported more olive oil than it produced for the first time in 2025.
The numbers show that domestic olive oil production fell sharply last year, from around 63,000 hectoliters in 2024 to less than 46,000 hectoliters in 2025. Meanwhile, imports increased significantly, from approximately 37,000 hectoliters in 2024 to almost 60,000 hectoliters in 2025.
This marks a decline of around 27% in domestic production and an increase of around 62% in imports. The Croatian government has attributed the result partly to climate change and insufficient application of agricultural measures.
