Crop Prices Soar to 14-Year High Amid Global Supply Chain Disruptions
Crop prices have reached their highest level in over a decade due to global supply chain disruptions and extreme weather conditions. The Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index, which tracks ten major agricultural commodities, rose by over 13% in August, its largest monthly gain since July 2012.
The index's gains are largely driven by wheat prices, which have reached a three-year high due to attacks on Black Sea ports during the Ukraine war. This has disrupted shipments from one of the world's most important grain-producing regions, leaving the global market with few alternatives.
Russia and Ukraine together account for over a quarter of global wheat exports, in addition to supplying significant quantities of barley, corn, and sunflower oil. The disruptions have left farmers and consumers worried about higher costs, particularly as energy and transportation prices continue to rise due to the war in Iran.
