Crop Prices Surge 13% Amid War, Weather Disruptions
Crop prices surged to their biggest monthly gain since 2012 in August due to wars and extreme weather disrupting supplies, fueling concerns about food inflation.
The Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index rose over 13% in August, with wheat being one of the main drivers. Wheat prices reached a three-year high after attacks on Black Sea ports cut shipments from a major growing region.
Sugar and cocoa also saw significant gains, up more than 20%, as a strengthening El Niño fueled weather worries. The El Niño phenomenon is expected to impact crop development in West Africa next year.
The supply chain disruptions are not limited to wheat, with Ukraine and Russia accounting for over a quarter of the world's wheat exports. Both countries have been hit by the ongoing war, with grain exports slowing down significantly.
