Crop Prices Surge Amid War, Weather Disruptions
Crop prices have surged by over 13% in August, marking their biggest monthly gain since July 2012, according to the Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index. The index tracks 10 major products, and wheat has been a key driver of the increase, with prices reaching a three-year high due to disruptions in shipments from the Black Sea region caused by war.
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has slowed grain exports from both countries, which account for over a quarter of global wheat exports. The Ukrainian government is stockpiling silo bags, while Russia is exploring rail subsidies to reroute some grain exports to the Baltic. This leaves few alternatives to fill the gap.
Poor weather conditions have also affected US and European corn harvests, further boosting commodity prices like cocoa. A powerful El Niño is expected to impact crops into next year, adding to supply concerns.
