Crude Oil Price Surge Sends Ripples Through Global Markets

The recent surge in crude oil prices has sent shockwaves through global markets, particularly those reliant on petroleum liquids.

A memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran in June initially led to a brief dip in Brent crude prices, but renewed attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz sparked a sharp price increase, with Brent soaring from $69 to nearly $105 per barrel in just three weeks.

The Strait of Hormuz is the world's busiest oil shipping lane, and its disruption has had a ripple effect across downstream markets, including petrochemicals. Global inventories have fallen by an estimated 4.2 million barrels per day in the second quarter, with an additional drawdown expected in the third quarter.

As crude prices remain elevated, naphtha-based crackers in Asia are facing input costs that have roughly doubled at their peak, squeezing margins for refiners and olefin producers.
