Crude Oil Price Surge Sends Sensex Plummeting by 325 Points
The Bombay Stock Exchange saw significant declines on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, as rising crude oil prices weighed heavily on investor sentiment. The Sensex plummeted by 325.78 points, or 0.42%, to settle at 76,909.68, marking its fourth consecutive day of decline. Over the last four days, the benchmark has lost a substantial 1,170.28 points, or 1.49%.
The Nifty also extended its losses to seven days, dropping 76.60 points, or 0.32%, to close at 24,078.30. It has tumbled by 505.5 points, or 2%, in the last week alone. Among the major laggards from the Sensex pack were Power Grid, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro, ITC, Hindustan Unilever, and Reliance Industries.
However, some stocks managed to buck the trend, with HCL Tech, Eternal, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Sun Pharma emerging as winners. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, surged by 1.04% to $91.97 per barrel, exacerbating concerns over a prolonged disruption to energy supplies.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Ltd., attributed the market's cautiousness to investors' concerns about the Federal Reserve's battle against inflation and the lack of a diplomatic resolution following the end of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire. Asian markets also saw significant declines, with South Korea's Kospi tanking by 5.80%.
