Crude Oil Prices Hit $100 as Middle East Tensions Soar

In September, international crude oil prices topped $100 per barrel for the first time in history, driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb Strait saw heightened pressure, causing a surge in tanker insurance premiums.

Despite this, prices retreated rapidly on September 11 after Oman-led mediation efforts led to an announced meeting between Iran's Foreign Minister and counterparts from six Gulf states to discuss an interim agreement on merchant vessel passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

The volatile environment fueled a sharp rise in isooctanol prices, which surged by 10.57% in September, reaching a yearly high of 9,766.67 RMB/ton. Analysts at SunSirs attribute this to a combination of factors, including rising crude oil prices and maintenance shutdowns at isooctanol plants.

However, with prices already at historical highs, downstream buyers are resistant to high costs and show little willingness to chase the rally. The market is expected to fluctuate at high levels during mid-to-late September, with a risk of a sharp correction in crude oil prices.
