Crude Oil Prices Plummet on Misinterpreted Diplomatic Breakthrough
Crude oil prices plummeted for a third consecutive session as traders prematurely celebrated the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, it appears that the waterway remains partially closed due to ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Iran and Oman discussed establishing a temporary shipping corridor on Wednesday, with Oman's foreign minister hinting at an imminent announcement.
Although this development was enough to trigger a 'war premium' exit from oil contracts, it has become clear that the situation is more complex than initially thought. The API reported a 4.2 million-barrel build in U.S. crude stockpiles, further pressuring prices.
As a result, WTI dipped below $81 and Brent fell below $86, hitting their lowest levels since August 10. Brent's decline is particularly notable, given its proximity to the Gulf barrels that are being re-priced.
