Crude Oil Prices Soar Amid Saudi Pipeline Attacks
The crude oil market is experiencing a surge in prices due to growing concerns over supply chains for Middle Eastern crude oil following attacks on pipelines in Saudi Arabia. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite Index both fell last week, weighed down by rising crude oil futures and interest rates.
According to data from the CFTC, net long positions in NYMEX WTI crude oil hit a 20-week high as of September 8. Meanwhile, the average price of diesel in the United States has surpassed $6 per gallon for the first time, while gasoline prices remain elevated and refinery utilization rates have reached approximately 98%.
As a result, the Trump administration is considering invoking the Defense Production Act to expand refining capacity. However, executives at refining companies stated that new refineries require several years to become operational, leading them to prioritize improving the efficiency of existing facilities.
