Crude Oil Selloff May Be Overdone as Fundamentals Remain Tight
The recent sharp decline in crude oil prices may be overdone, according to analysts who caution that underlying market fundamentals remain tight. Benchmark crude futures have fallen by more than 8% over the past two weeks, driven by a combination of macroeconomic uncertainty, profit-taking, and shifting sentiment around global demand.
The selloff accelerated after weaker-than-expected manufacturing data from China and the eurozone reignited concerns about industrial demand. Traders also reacted to signals that OPEC+ may begin unwinding some voluntary production cuts earlier than previously anticipated, adding to the bearish tone.
However, several market analysts argue that the magnitude of the decline is disproportionate to the actual shift in supply-demand balances. Physical crude markets remain relatively tight, with U.S. commercial crude inventories having fallen for three consecutive weeks and remaining below the five-year seasonal average.
