Crude Prices Plummet as US Eases Tensions with Iran
Crude oil prices tumbled today after reports emerged that the US is easing tensions with Iran. The October WTI crude oil (CLV26) price fell by 3% to a one-week low, while the October RBOB gasoline (RBV26) price dropped by 0.62%. The decline in crude prices comes as the US State Department prepares to send diplomats back to embassies in the Middle East that were evacuated before and during the war with Iran.
The New York Times reported that the Trump administration does not anticipate a return to all-out hostilities with Iran, suggesting that tensions are easing. Additionally, signs that crude flows through the Strait of Hormuz are increasing also weighed on crude prices. On Monday, Axios reported that about 40 tankers transited out of the Strait of Hormuz last Friday night, transporting around 16 million barrels of crude.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that any country doing business with Iran risks facing US sanctions, and the Trump administration has identified five of Iran's 'most vital lifelines' to target. However, President Trump said that the US naval blockade on Iranian ports is putting pressure on the country, and he has no timeline for resolving the US-Iran conflict.
