Crypto and Gold Outshine US Equities in August
In August, cryptocurrencies and gold led the market's performance, but not everyone fared equally well. Bitcoin rose 25.04%, while Ethereum surged 32.57%. Gold also gained ground, appreciating by 9.43%. In contrast, US equities showed clear divergence, with small-cap stocks remaining largely flat.
The crypto rally extended beyond these top performers, with most tokens advancing during the month. However, there were exceptions within this broad uptrend. Ondo defied the trend, falling 11.23%, while Pump.fun rose 115.09% and Ethena gained 86.16%. The divergence between cryptocurrencies and US equities raises questions about who will be revealed to be 'swimming naked' when the tide recedes.
Gold's gain significantly outpaced what currency fluctuations could explain, according to the data. The Dollar Index fell only 0.37% during August. September's inflation data will help determine whether short-term rates can decline alongside the dollar.
